The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office said a 29-year-old woman who was shot inside her home Monday evening is dead.  Sheriff Ana Franklin said the shooting appears to be an accident.

Sheriff’s deputies rushed to the house in the 1100 block of Charest Road in Somerville shortly after 5 p.m. Monday. They discovered Lora Michelle West laying on the floor with a gunshot wound to her chest.

No charges have been filed in the case for now.  West’s body will undergo an autopsy in Huntsville on Thursday.

A neighbor who ran to the scene and tried to revive the woman told WHNT News 19 that the gun fired by accident. Charlie Steelman lives across the street, and said the pistol went off when the woman’s boyfriend put the still loaded weapon on a countertop. Steelman said the couple had two children who were inside the home when it happened.

“I heard his kids screaming, and just knew something bad was happening,” said Steelman. “I ran across over there, but it was too late. It was all over.”

The names of the gunowner and victim have not yet been released. Sheriff Franklin told WHNT News 19 that no charges have been filed.
