Update: 2012-13 School Calendar Approved
The Huntsville School Board voted Thursday night to approve the new 2012-2013 school calendar. The changes will keep students in the classroom for a total of 180 days and save some teacher instructional days.
School board members along with dozens of parents voiced their disapproval of the changes to the calendar but were forced to make the change to keep with the new state mandate. Over 40 percent of the district’s budget comes from the state.
This 2012-13 calendar is for Huntsville, Madison and Madison County schools. Other school systems in north Alabama will create their own calendar.
- First day for students is Monday, August 20
- No fall break
- Students’ last day before Christmas break is Friday, December 21
- Students return on Thursday, January 3
- Spring break is March 25-29
- Last day for students is May 23
The calendar contains 180 days for students.
Local school systems had to change the calendar after Alabama’s legislature passed House Bill 360, the School Flexibility Act of 2012. The new law states Alabama public schools can start no earlier than two weeks before Labor Day and end no later than the Friday before Memorial Day.
