The University of Alabama in Huntsville’s Whitney Gilbert has been selected as the Gulf South Conference Pitcher of the Week as announced by the league office on Tuesday. The honor marks the fourth time this season a Charger has garnered a weekly accolade from the conference.

Gilbert was outstanding last week, tossing three complete-game shutouts, and she racked up 14 strikeouts to move past the century mark for the season as she now owns 108. In the three games, she allowed just four hits in each.

The Rogersville, Tenn., native was the best when she needed to be the most as she struck out six in a 1-0 victory over Delta State. Only twice did the Lady Statesmen have a runner at second, and Gilbert did not allow a runner to reach third at all in the contest.

The pristine week dropped her ERA to 2.05 on the year, and she ranks among the league’s best in ERA, opponent’s batting average, strikeouts and wins.

Gilbert and her teammates will return to action this weekend as they take on West Florida at 4 p.m. on Saturday and West Alabama at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
