Greg Screws co-anchors WHNT News 19 at 5:00 p.m. and WHNT News 19 at 6:00 p.m.

Greg is very much in demand as a public speaker. His life experience of covering news, sports, personalities and overcoming life’s difficulties makes for great after dinner and public speaking.

If there is a topic that requires an opinion, Greg will give you one. His favorite saying is “Right or wrong, I am rarely in doubt.”

Greg also brings you a weekly Taking Action feature, Deal or Dud. In “Deal or Dud,” Greg will test various products to see if they live up to their promises. Do you know of a product you’d like Greg to test? Maybe a company promises their product will give you better gas mileage, or their fertilizer will help your flowers grow more than you’ve ever seen. Email Greg about a particular product on our Deal or Dud page on WHNT.com. You can see these stories each Wednesday on WHNT News 19 at 10:00 p.m.

Growing up in Hartselle, Greg had an unspectacular basketball career which led him to become a little league parent as his daughter played hoops. Despite having Greg give her tips on how to play basketball, Emily became a very good player who played on a team that finished second in the AAU nationals and won the state sports festival three years in a row.

After leaving Hartselle and realizing higher education was a challenge in addition to being a goal, Greg went to the University of Alabama. His “brush with greatness moment” at the University of Alabama was seeing Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant in a Shoney’s Restaurant. Greg majored in Communications at Alabama and worked at WCFT television before moving to WVTM in Birmingham. Greg’s stop in Birmingham television sparked his love of NASCAR and is also where he realized weathermen rarely pick up the check at lunch.

From there, Greg traveled to Richmond, Virginia for a stop at WRIC television. There Greg worked with Chip Tarkenton, the nephew of NFL great Fran Tarkenton. His friendship with Chip ended when Fran and Greg got into a heated discussion at Thanksgiving over the NFL Greats’ lack of success in Super Bowls. From Richmond, Greg moved back to Huntsville where he did sports and morning television for eight years. After 25 years in television, Greg had the itch to take a sabbatical and worked for 15 months with United Way of Madison County.

“Working at United Way of Madison County was a remarkably rewarding experience,” Screws said. “Thanks to the United Way of Madison County I realized how much I didn’t know about my own community, and am resolved to place community service as a priority in my life.”

But it took the call from a friend to make Greg start thinking television news once again. “Denise Vickers is one of the best news directors in the country,” said Greg. “I was flattered when she called and wanted me immediately to be on WHNT’s team of sharp and focused managers who take their work and craft very seriously.”

Greg’s daughter Emily works at the University of Alabama. Once Greg asked if she wanted to work in television and Emily said “you have to be kidding me.” Emily is very patient when her father calls her at least three times a day.

  • Only “FloatSpa” in Alabama in Huntsville

The phrase “total sensory deprivation” speaks clearly. Imagine having the ability, if you choose, to simulate what it must be like to float in space. No light. No sound. A sense of weightlessness. What if there was a way to slow your brain down, maybe shut it down, and completely relax. One of the hot trends in the pursuit of wellness and relaxation is “floating.” The only “float spa” in Alabama is in Huntsville at 8415 Whitesburg Dr. South.  It’s […]

  • Slider Station a Deal

It always seems like we’re testing food prep items on Deal or Dud. It’s mainly because we really eat all the time. We love our food.   And we love burgers big or small. Needless to say, we can consume sliders by the dozens. The Slider Station is a great product.   It’s a “Deal.” It’s a double-sided non-stick press that allows the meat to cook evenly. You can make five at a time.  You can normally find them for […]

  • Top Five Deals of 2016

We have a nice list for the “Top Five Deals of 2016.” Some of them have to do with climate control, and one in particular, a tool to start your car. Number Five on our list is the Comfort Zone Fan. If you get a little extra toasty at work, you can use the small fan to cool down. It’s four inches wide, and the blades deliver a nice breeze. The coolest thing, is that you can plug it into […]

You’ve probably heard an old saying that goes something like “a long journey start with the first step.” That is a good thing to keep in mind when you start on a journey toward a healthy lifestyle.  It’s “crawl … walk … run.” Huntsville Hospital Wellness Center Program Director Kevin Ready says people don’t need to overthink it. They just need to take the first step. “We get a lot of people who are like think I’m not going to […]

  • Health Matters: Personal trainers do the thinking for you

People work crazy hard these days.   Keeping up with a personal training regiment on top of everything else can seem almost impossible. Huntsville Hospital Wellness Center Program Director Kevin Ready says a personal trainer can do the thinking for you. “If you don’t want to think about your workout … if you need some accountability … for some people it motivates them just to have the appointment.” Also, a personal trainer makes sure the workout sessions don’t become routine […]

The hook, or hooks, on the Handy Heater is that you can plug it directly into an outlet.   Also, […]

  • Lots of progress: Greg Screws checks in with a weight loss update

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The last few months have been action packed when it comes to working out and weight loss.  Back in February, when I had a severe health episode due to blood clots, I weighed 310. My blood pressure was high, and most all my markers were borderline bad. After checking in with Huntsville Hospital nurse practitioner Kandess Anderson, the picture is much better.  I’ve made a lot of headway. All the key numbers are much better. The big […]

  • A sign of good in the world: Bacon

We love testing products for Deal or Dud that involve bacon. The irony of that is I’m in the middle of a massive workout/diet program and have lost about 40 pounds. I love bacon.   And now I’m kind of loving turkey bacon. But I digress. Anything with bacon is a sign that not all is lost in this world. Part of our TV family, WNEP tested the Bacon Boss. We love their test. The Bacon Boss is a product that […]
