Greg Screws co-anchors WHNT News 19 at 5:00 p.m. and WHNT News 19 at 6:00 p.m.

Greg is very much in demand as a public speaker. His life experience of covering news, sports, personalities and overcoming life’s difficulties makes for great after dinner and public speaking.

If there is a topic that requires an opinion, Greg will give you one. His favorite saying is “Right or wrong, I am rarely in doubt.”

Greg also brings you a weekly Taking Action feature, Deal or Dud. In “Deal or Dud,” Greg will test various products to see if they live up to their promises. Do you know of a product you’d like Greg to test? Maybe a company promises their product will give you better gas mileage, or their fertilizer will help your flowers grow more than you’ve ever seen. Email Greg about a particular product on our Deal or Dud page on WHNT.com. You can see these stories each Wednesday on WHNT News 19 at 10:00 p.m.

Growing up in Hartselle, Greg had an unspectacular basketball career which led him to become a little league parent as his daughter played hoops. Despite having Greg give her tips on how to play basketball, Emily became a very good player who played on a team that finished second in the AAU nationals and won the state sports festival three years in a row.

After leaving Hartselle and realizing higher education was a challenge in addition to being a goal, Greg went to the University of Alabama. His “brush with greatness moment” at the University of Alabama was seeing Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant in a Shoney’s Restaurant. Greg majored in Communications at Alabama and worked at WCFT television before moving to WVTM in Birmingham. Greg’s stop in Birmingham television sparked his love of NASCAR and is also where he realized weathermen rarely pick up the check at lunch.

From there, Greg traveled to Richmond, Virginia for a stop at WRIC television. There Greg worked with Chip Tarkenton, the nephew of NFL great Fran Tarkenton. His friendship with Chip ended when Fran and Greg got into a heated discussion at Thanksgiving over the NFL Greats’ lack of success in Super Bowls. From Richmond, Greg moved back to Huntsville where he did sports and morning television for eight years. After 25 years in television, Greg had the itch to take a sabbatical and worked for 15 months with United Way of Madison County.

“Working at United Way of Madison County was a remarkably rewarding experience,” Screws said. “Thanks to the United Way of Madison County I realized how much I didn’t know about my own community, and am resolved to place community service as a priority in my life.”

But it took the call from a friend to make Greg start thinking television news once again. “Denise Vickers is one of the best news directors in the country,” said Greg. “I was flattered when she called and wanted me immediately to be on WHNT’s team of sharp and focused managers who take their work and craft very seriously.”

Greg’s daughter Emily works at the University of Alabama. Once Greg asked if she wanted to work in television and Emily said “you have to be kidding me.” Emily is very patient when her father calls her at least three times a day.

Start today making a financial plan

There is an old saying about the perfect time to start saving money. It changes in the telling.  But the simple version is … ‘the best time to start saving money is today.’ That was true yesterday, is true today, and will be true tomorrow.  That perspective on finances comes at a time when many of us find ourselves overextended financially.  We want to please family and loved ones so bad, it’s easy to slap that credit card down and […]

    Top Five ‘Deals’ of 2015

It’s hard to pick a “Top Five” that cover the worst and best. This year’s best was pretty easy. Our top five from the bottom up began with the Vegetti. You can find them ranging from $14.99-$19.99. You can shred a ton of veggie pasta in a short period of pasta. It works great. Next was the “It Floats.” If you are like most people and have your smartphone surgically attached to you hand, the “It Floats” may be for […]

Quirky and Odd Christmas Items! (Ever heard of mental acuity tea?)

There are some great places to shop for quirky and odd items for Christmas. One of my favorites is The Grommet.  The Grommet is a product–launch site.  If you have an idea that stems from your life, you develop it, and want someone to mass product it, The Grommet may be an option. The site is jammed packed with items designed to make your work, play, and family life easier and more engaging.  There is a “personal values” section of […]

  • Star Shower

Star Shower Laser Light OK, not as good as Blue Oyster Cult lasers

One day, basketball practice had not gone particularly well. We started late for some reason. About an hour. We had played lousy for a couple of weeks, and the coach pulled the thing coaches do when they are out of answers to make bad basketball players (which we were) play good … or even competently. We ran for 90 minutes at practice that day. Just ran. After the 90 minutes we were still bad basketball players. It was great […]

    Glove.ly Touchscreen Gloves a Deal

There are things I never can keep track of…. Like prepositions. If I could keep track of prepositions, I wouldn’t have ended the first sentence of this story with “of.” Or the third. But I digress. How about this? There are so many of which I can never keep track. Keys. Money. Life goals and skills. I also have trouble keeping up with sunglasses and gloves. Gloves are a pain. I’m at the point in my life where I really need […]

Volunteer Center of Morgan County invites you to help teens at Christmas

DECATUR, Ala. – The Volunteer Center of Morgan County is working hard to help some local teenagers have a great Christmas.  The Center is helping 107 underprivileged teens this holiday season.  About 30 teens have been adopted out, so that means there is plenty more work to be done. Volunteer Center Director Kay Woller says you don’t have to be extravagant.  She says the teens that need help would be very happy to get some very basic items which would […]

Deal or Dud: Testing Wipe New Tires kit

I’ve never really understood the whole concept of washing a car. It’s sort of like raking leaves. I never understood that either. You go out Saturday at 8:15 AM, after a breakfast of unfrosted pop tarts and whatever diet soda is on sale, and start raking leaves. (I once told Melissa Riopka I love unfrosted pop tarts. She stared me down and said “that’s just wrong.” I miss Melissa. I will be glad when she gets back even if she […]

    Halloween tool a Dud

Halloween is almost here! I like Halloween.  I like it much the same way I like bus fumes and Tetanus shots. Something about kids demanding candy from me, AND THEY ARE NOT GETTING MY ROLOS, while scrolling through Facebook. It goes something like this… (scroll…scroll…scroll…scroll) “Hmm…Yeah. Like Trick or Treat dud. I hope you got something good. Your neighbor just gave us Zero bars and that is lame.” And that is the third graders. It’s at that point I give […]

  • Miracle Peeler

Miracle Peeler not a miracle but it is a Deal

The Miracle Peeler has some bold claims on the packaging. After all, it claims to be a “miracle.” A device that claims to peel potatoes faster doesn’t rank up there with turning water into wine. A quantum leap in peeling, and not pealing, but peeling, would be nice. There is a warning.  It’s not a warning about the potatoes, but the warning is about the Miracle Peeler, and not a miracle pealer.   The warning is about the blades. The warning is not […]

    Helping South Carolina from Alabama

DECATUR, Ala. – The United Methodist Committee on Relief is putting some muscle behind Psalm 46:1. ‘God is our refuge and strength, and ever present help in trouble.’ They are taking the good fight to those who are weary and in need of support in South Carolina. UMCOR is the acronym. They have a warehouse in Decatur that covers five states when a major crisis occurs. Tim Steffen is from Macon, Georgia. He says “we believe we can do things […]

  • Quirky Two

    Quirky charger a Deal

We’re always, it seems, looking for places to charge phones and tablets.   Much of life revolves around finding a place to charge a phone. Now, an odd device finds itself on the market called the “Quirky Contort Power.” And quirky it is. A man Emad Yahia invented it and a company called Quirky built it. The premise is that you plug it into the wall. There is an AC plug on the Quirky Contort Power that replaces the plug you […]

  • Pouch

    Submersible Pouch a Deal

“Hey, can I borrow your smartphone to test a device that claims to keep it safe if it’s submerged.” “No.” That’s the way most of my conversations went looking for a way to test the iTFloats Travelon Clear View Waterproof Pouch. I personally could have shortened the name of that product but they didn’t call. The pouch cost us $9.99. We were lucky with this. On Travelon’s website, the cost was $13.99. I wasn’t crazy about the product initially. There […]
