Greg Screws co-anchors WHNT News 19 at 5:00 p.m. and WHNT News 19 at 6:00 p.m.

Greg is very much in demand as a public speaker. His life experience of covering news, sports, personalities and overcoming life’s difficulties makes for great after dinner and public speaking.

If there is a topic that requires an opinion, Greg will give you one. His favorite saying is “Right or wrong, I am rarely in doubt.”

Greg also brings you a weekly Taking Action feature, Deal or Dud. In “Deal or Dud,” Greg will test various products to see if they live up to their promises. Do you know of a product you’d like Greg to test? Maybe a company promises their product will give you better gas mileage, or their fertilizer will help your flowers grow more than you’ve ever seen. Email Greg about a particular product on our Deal or Dud page on WHNT.com. You can see these stories each Wednesday on WHNT News 19 at 10:00 p.m.

Growing up in Hartselle, Greg had an unspectacular basketball career which led him to become a little league parent as his daughter played hoops. Despite having Greg give her tips on how to play basketball, Emily became a very good player who played on a team that finished second in the AAU nationals and won the state sports festival three years in a row.

After leaving Hartselle and realizing higher education was a challenge in addition to being a goal, Greg went to the University of Alabama. His “brush with greatness moment” at the University of Alabama was seeing Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant in a Shoney’s Restaurant. Greg majored in Communications at Alabama and worked at WCFT television before moving to WVTM in Birmingham. Greg’s stop in Birmingham television sparked his love of NASCAR and is also where he realized weathermen rarely pick up the check at lunch.

From there, Greg traveled to Richmond, Virginia for a stop at WRIC television. There Greg worked with Chip Tarkenton, the nephew of NFL great Fran Tarkenton. His friendship with Chip ended when Fran and Greg got into a heated discussion at Thanksgiving over the NFL Greats’ lack of success in Super Bowls. From Richmond, Greg moved back to Huntsville where he did sports and morning television for eight years. After 25 years in television, Greg had the itch to take a sabbatical and worked for 15 months with United Way of Madison County.

“Working at United Way of Madison County was a remarkably rewarding experience,” Screws said. “Thanks to the United Way of Madison County I realized how much I didn’t know about my own community, and am resolved to place community service as a priority in my life.”

But it took the call from a friend to make Greg start thinking television news once again. “Denise Vickers is one of the best news directors in the country,” said Greg. “I was flattered when she called and wanted me immediately to be on WHNT’s team of sharp and focused managers who take their work and craft very seriously.”

Greg’s daughter Emily works at the University of Alabama. Once Greg asked if she wanted to work in television and Emily said “you have to be kidding me.” Emily is very patient when her father calls her at least three times a day.

    Pouch Couch a Deal

The Pouch Couch is a unique multi-purpose item designed for homes or the outdoors. It’s a couch that can be used for things like camping, tailgating, or just lounging in the big TV room. Think beanbag chair for this generation. It cost $39.99 and like most As Seen on TV items, there is a deal offered for a second one if you buy it off the website. There is a way to just “scoop the air” to fill it up for use, […]

Perfect Tortilla Pan Set a “Deal”

The Perfect Tortilla Pan Set is a staple on the As Seen on TV circuit.   It’s a bowl that you drape a tortilla over and bake.   The tortilla bakes evenly and is perfect for salads or even a thick soup. The pan set is usually around $10 but on the big discount websites you can find them for half that. If you are looking for a way to eat healthy, this might be a tool to include in your arsenal. […]

    True Touch a “Deal”

It’s a staple on the “As Seen on TV” shelves and infomercials. And it’s an item that many with dogs as family members would be interested in trying. The True Touch is a glove designed, with silicon tips, that allow you to deal with a shedding animal, mainly dogs. The ballpark cost for the True Touch is $14.99. The people in the True Touch test we aired worked at a vet’s office. One of them really loved it. The only […]

Small steps are crucial as you work to make big changes with your health

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Jerry Hayes and Greg Screws continue to work hard to get healthy.  We’re tracking their journey in a series of stories called “Health Matters.” One thing both men have learned — it’s one step at a time.  If you lose five to 10 percent of your body weight, it can have huge implications for your health. “That means you may be able to cut down on your medication,” said Linda Steakley, a Registered Dietitian & Nutritionist with Huntsville […]

    Easy Pull a “Deal”

It’s one of the cooler kitchen items we’ve come across. Up front, the Easy Pull Food Processor is a “Deal.” We love it. It’s a food processor that operates on muscle. It does not use batteries or electricity. You chop up the food so that it will fit in the Easy Pull. The top of the Easy Pull has a cord that you pull, like cranking an old school lawnmower, and the blades chop and process the food. This would […]

Health Matters: Greg Screws taking it one day at a time, and he’s seeing results

My roadmap for my journey to get healthy is pretty simple.  I’m at 2,000 calories a day. I use the Fitness Pal App to “stay between the lines” so to speak. It’s a huge help and helps me manage snacks and late night food the most. I’ve realized that most of the time I’m looking for food late, I’m not really hungry. I try to do 30 minutes of cardio every day. I shoot for 60 … but can’t do […]

    Bark collar a “Deal”

The Gentle Spray Anti Bark Collar is an alternative to shock bark collars. The “shock” bark collars are controversial because many people feel they harm the dog.  Those collars provide a literal “shock” to the dog to make it stop barking. The Gentle Spray uses a citronella spray that initiates when the dog barks. The spray goes off in front of the dog and is not really sprayed in the dog’s face. Vets say dogs don’t like the citronella smell.   […]

Health Matters gets real, fast for Huntsville woman

A few people have asked me if I was hesitant to share the story of the massive pulmonary embolism event from last February. The answer is usually “not at all.” Linda Culpepper is my new best friend. She sent me an email after watching my story on August 8 detailing  my ordeal with blood clots. Those clots put me in the ICU several days and caused me to miss a month of work. But Linda … she made my day. […]

  • Comfort Zone Fan

    Comfort Zone Fan a Deal

The Comfort  Zone Dual Power High Velocity Fan is a really good deal.  It only cost $8.99. Like most guys, I like for it to snow in the room I’m in.   They won’t let me turn the thermostat down to 48 … so I have to improvise. The Comfort Zone puts out a nice breeze. That is amazing because the fan is only four inches across. Here is the best part. It is not only powered by AC, but also by […]

    Actifry a Deal

The Actifry is another of the many products on the market that claim to cook healthy food.  It’s a little pricey. You can search for them on the Internet for anywhere from $200 to $300. The Actifry claims to have a unique patented technology that pushes hot air through to help cook the food, and a stirring paddle that allow you to prepare the food with a minimum of cooking oil. It works pretty well. It cooks frozen food. Our […]

Greg Screws on his journey back to health: “Crawl, walk, run”

My journey back to a healthy state is going to be slow. It’s a crawl, walk, run process. And I’m lucky. Since the station is using my journey as a story to tell and increase social media engagement, I have many experts at my fingertips. Obviously, not everyone has great bosses like mine who put a path in place that allows me to tap into nutritionists and personal trainers. I get that. The tradeoff is … I’m eager to tell […]

Tyme 2-in-1 seems to be a Deal

Many women (and smart guys buying for the lady in their life ) are always keeping an eye out for a great hair tool. The Tyme Hair Straightener and Curling Iron is a pricey 2-in-1 tool that is getting a lot of attention. It cost around $200. Our sister station in North Carolina, WGHP, found two ladies to test it. They got a mixed bag. One person “kinda liked it/kinda didn’t.” One person did like it. For the most part, […]
