Common Ground: A Taking Action effort to create healthy conversations for the holidays

Watch 'Common Ground' this Sunday, December 10, at noon.

Program Note:  Normally at that time, you'd see an NFL game. This weekend, CBS only offered affiliates a single-header.  Because WHNT is a Titans' station, we are airing the Titans when they take on the Arizona Cardinals at 3pm central.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Critical conversations between people who don't agree on politics and social issues have become rare, and when they happen, they are often infected with bitterness and anger. WHNT News 19 wanted to see if people can still find common ground through conversation.

We set out to find five strangers with vastly different backgrounds and different opinions, and we asked them to wrestle with a tough topic together. We chose the debate over kneeling protests of social justice and inequality during the national anthem.

We brought together a history professor, an aerospace engineer, a sales manager, a management consultant and community activist. Black and white. Male and female.

They traded opinions and experiences. They talked about what unites them and what divides.

And they did, in fact, find common ground.

In our Tacking Action Special Report, we hope to show that while our society may have to confront the fact that it has become bitter over our deep divides, it is not yet broken.

Not if we can continue to talk honestly with one another.
