CLEMSON, SC (AL.com) - In what was a near repeat of last year’s season-opening tilt at Jordan-Hare Stadium, an ineffective offense doomed No. 13 Auburn on the road against No. 13 Clemson, 14-6, at Memorial Stadium.
Auburn got off to a strong start and controlled the game for much of the first half, but Auburn settled for field goals over touchdowns early — something it could ill afford to do against the defending national champions. Although Auburn’s defense carried it throughout the night—much like in last season’s meeting between the two teams — it wasn’t enough as the offense that was supposed to be buoyed by the returns of running back Kamryn Pettway and wide receiver Kyle Davis mustered just 117 yards of total offense and allowed 11 sacks on the night.
