UPDATE: No charges filed in Guntersville shopping center shooting, case to go to a Grand Jury

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. - Guntersville Police have finished an investigation into a shooting that left one person injured Sunday night.

The shooting happened in a parking lot area behind a shopping center off of U.S. Highway 431. Police say the shooting is an isolated incident. "This past Sunday evening at one of our shopping centers two parties met in the context of a drug deal," Guntersville Police Chief Jim Peterson said, "During this drug deal there was some argument over the product that one party was supplying to another."

Peterson says one person pulled out a weapon, and that's when someone else pulled out a gun and fired, hitting a man.  "He was driven to a residence initially, and then to the hospital," Peterson said.

The man was released shortly afterward. Right now, there will be no charges pending. "Due to the nature of what was occurring, there was some major conflict in the stories of both parties," adds Peterson.

Officers wrapped up the investigation, unless  new information or evidence becomes available. "This will be presented to a Grand Jury to decide  what should happen going forward," Peterson said.

A situation of this nature is uncommon in Guntersville. "We are able to handle it and deal with it when it occurs, but for the most part we don't have to deal with this type of crime on an ongoing basis, and we do everything we can to prevent it," Peterson says.

Police say all of the people involved are identified, but their names will not be released. "There's no threat to the public outside of what was taking place between those two parties at that time," Peterson said.

Police arrested one person on an unrelated charge. Officers will continue to investigate the drug deal that led to the shooting.
