HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Tinsel Trail will officially open Friday night at 6:30. And while this particular holiday tradition will light up the night, literally, one group of friends used it as an opportunity to bring some light into someone else’s life.

They call themselves ‘the crazy eight’, and if the holidays are about coming together, this group is a great example of what that looks like.

There’s nothing like the bond between girlfriends. And for ‘the crazy eight’, even a serious¬†illness can’t come between them. Kara Howard is the 1/8 they’re focusing on right now.

“A couple of months ago she was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer, and so we’ve been doing everything we can to rally around her and support her,” said Chris Penney.

Kara is only 34 years old. Her friends wanted to do something special for her to brighten up her holiday, and so they’re surprising her with a tree on the tinsel trail, decorated with a few of her favorite things.

“She loves ballet, she grew up doing ballet, she’s a dancer, so we’ve got tons of stuff on here, Game of Thrones is one of her favorite TV shows so we’ve got a bunch of her Game of Thrones stuff,” said Penney.

Pictures of Kara with her family and friends adorn the three. The crazy eight chose to do a tree because they know it will mean a lot to her.

“Just to represent what she loves, and honor her with something, you know like we said she always has the most beautiful Christmas tree, yeah, she loves the holiday,” said crazy eight members Margaret Gleason and Jennifer Panico.

And Kara, if you see this, your friends want to make sure you know something.

“We love you!”
