TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) – Authorities say a University of Alabama student who claimed she had been raped by two men Nov. 13 wasn’t attacked.

Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Capt. Gary Hood says the 18-year-old student made up the account.  The student, Emma Mannion, was arrested Friday on a misdemeanor charge of filing a false report.

The Tuscaloosa News reports Hood says the teenager told police she was forced inside a car at 2 a.m. last Sunday. Detectives interviewed witnesses and recovered video surveillance which Hood said Friday didn’t support her account.

“We hope that this does not deter true victims of crimes from coming to us,” he said. “We hope it does deter those who are making a game by falsely reporting these kinds of assaults,” said Capt. Hood.

The police official said that after being confronted, the student acknowledged falsifying her report. Hood did not provide her reason for doing so but noted she had been drinking.

The university says the police report is being forwarded to its Office of Student Conduct for further investigation.
