HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Opening gifts is one of the joys of the holiday season. The Neighborhood Thrift Store allows parents and guardians to do volunteer work to earn store credit. That store credit allows them to purchase new Christmas gifts for their children.
"It's just a really great program, they do so many things for the kids," Jacqueline Layne said about the Neighborhood Thrift Store.
Layne was a volunteer at the store until she was hired. The Neighborhood Thrift Store allows people to earn $50 store credit which they can use at the shop.
"At Christmastime, parents come in, and they can volunteer for toys for their kids," Layne said. "They get it at a lesser price than they would if they went to a big retail store."
The toys come in, brand new, and hit the shelves at 30%-50% of retail value, helping parents to purchase them with 100% dignity.
" They feel a lot of pride in coming here and purchasing the toys for their kids," Layne said. "They know that they're helping the store to grow even more."
Anyone may come in and volunteer at the Neighborhood Thrift Store Monday through Friday. All of the money the store receives from the toy sales is used to purchase more toys for children.
