HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Tis the season of holiday shopping. Many in the Tennessee Valley will be hitting the stores after filling up on Thanksgiving turkey.
Most shoppers have their eyes on corporate doorbuster sales. But, what about doing your holiday shopping locally? That's exactly what the city of Huntsville is encouraging you to do.
Small Business Saturday is a movement that communities across the nation are taking part in. It was launched back in 2010 by American Express. The idea is to put money back into your local economy.
It's not just the small business owner you're helping. It's those who work at small businesses too. Of the nearly 8,000 businesses in Madison county, 94 percent have less than 50 employees.
"In businesses that small, the margin of profit can also be very small," said Jeff Gronberg with the Huntsville Chamber of Commerce.
Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle is a former small business owner. He also agrees that shopping local is extremely important for the health of Huntsville.
"People with hope who aspire to do something that is really special, own a small business, provide a service, do something, and employ people in our area," said Battle.
Many local businesses bring something to Huntsville that you won't see at large department stores. In fact, several small business owners on Clinton Row try to bring in products that you won't find anywhere else.
The Huntsville Chamber of Commerce is holding an online contest to promote Small Business Saturday.
All you have to do is stop in at your favorite local restaurant or small business on Saturday, November 26, but you must take a selfie while there.
