ANNISTON, Ala. – According to our news partners at AL.com , a man is in stable condition in a Birmingham hospital after police say he was shot fleeing the scene of a robbery.

Anniston Police Chief, Shane Denham said that incident happened around 9p.m. Friday at Betty’s Bar-B-Q.

During the investigation police discovered employees were preparing to close for the night when a man police identified as 20-year-old Malachi Hicks entered the rear of the business carrying a .22 pistol, demanding money. Denham said Hicks took the proceeds from the night and attempted to run.

However, one employee ran out of the business to a vehicle where the employee’s parents were waiting. The employee’s father produced a handgun and fired several shots at Hicks, wounding him.

Police then arrived, recovering the money and Hicks’ weapon.

Denham said all information on the incident will be turned over to the Calhoun County District Attorney’s office.

No one else was injured. No charges have been filed yet.
