CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ala. – Lighter winds Sunday helped fire crews gain control of the large wildfire burning near the DeKalb/Cherokee County line.
The fire has burned at least 350 acres in the Martha’s Falls area of Little River Canyon.
The blaze began Saturday morning. Large clouds of thick smoke could be seen from more than 30 miles away.
Officials say an illegal campfire is believed to have started the fire.
Alabama Highway 35 was shut down for a few hours Sunday as crews worked to put out flames.
