HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Oakleaf hydrangea is Alabama’s Official State Wildflower and it’s beautiful and easy to grow.

Your neighbor might have one or two, and maybe you do as well.  Friday, you can pick up a plant for free at Huntsville City Hall from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. while supplies last.  This event will be held rain or shine — and the plants go quickly every year!

We talked with Joy McKee, Director of Operation Green Team in the Facebook video below.

Friday’s giveaway at Huntsville City Hall is held in celebration of National Planting Day.  Teams will also hand out free hot dogs and water.

National Planting Day, a Keep America Beautiful initiative, is a nationwide event encouraging the planting of native species to support local ecosystems, reduce water consumption, improve soil stability, and provide food and shelter for indigenous wildlife.

Note: The plants held in the Facebook video are actually clusters of several plant seedlings. The free oakleaf hydrangeas being given away look more like this (1 root, 1 stem.) It's a nice, healthy plant though!

Oakleaf hydrangeas are versatile — they do well in full sun or shade.  George Bennett of Bennett Nurseries says the plant does very well in our environment.
