BOAZ, Ala. -- The Boaz Police Department is working to raise money to give Christmas to kids who might not have one.
The Boaz Police Department is there to protect and serve, and right now, the officers are taking that to a new level."On the t-shirts it says 'I support Boaz Police', but it's really supporting kids in the community, local community," explains Deputy Chief Josh Gaskin, "We're selling the t-shirts in the hopes that we can raise enough money to buy Christmas for those who otherwise wouldn't get Christmas."
The police department plans to partner with the city's schools to single out kids in need. "There are kids that during the year might not even get anything," Gaskin says, "Oftentimes at Christmas, it's just another day for some kids, but there are a lot of kids that that's the only time that they might possibly get something."
Gaskin says this initiative is a lot like the job the officers do every day, in that they need the community's help to make it work. So far, the community has stepped up to the plate. "We ordered around 1,000 t-shirts and we've already sold all of them but maybe ten," Gaskin says.
There's more on the way. "We just want to make sure that every kid we can possibly help, we help this year," Gaskin says.
The shirts are $15, and there are a range of sizes available. You can buy them Monday through Friday during normal business hours at the Boaz Police Records Department.
