Quilt raffle will raise money to support breast health services at Decatur-Morgan Hospital

DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) - WHNT NEWS 19 Pays it Forward in the River City this week. A woman came up with a way to help patients at Decatur Morgan Hospital.

Connie Lawrence works in the mammography center as a mammography technologist. She noticed patients needing financial help and others had certain skills and hobbies. She put them together, organizing an event where they could sell their items. They could make some money and a portion of the sales would go to the hospital's foundation. This year, there is a special item in the mix.

"This is our pink ribbon quilt," describes Lawrence. "It represents lots of different things."

It's a quilt full of colors and fabrics woven together with love and with women's health in mind.

"We have the pink ribbons for breast cancer," explains Lawrence. "We have the turquoise and teal for ovarian cancer. We have the red and that's for heart. We have the yellow for support of our troops because it's either your mother, daughter or sister going there."

The quilt is being raffled off. Tickets are $2 each and can be purchased in person at the mammography center at the Parkway campus. In October, at the Power of Pink walk, a drawing will determine who gets it. Ivy Veinot made it. You may remember her from a Pay it Forward a couple of years ago. Veinot helped us surprise Connie Lawrence.

As I counted out the money, tears welled up in Connie's eyes and it's because she knows how much it will help patients in need.

"I see women come in that need help and don't have insurance and we're having to try to help get them through the system," says Lawrence. "It's not just about having the mammogram. If we find something, then they've got to have all of the other tests, possibly surgery and everything that goes along with it. Last week, I had a patient come in. She was raising her six-year-old granddaughter because her 25-year-old daughter had died from breast cancer. We need it in the community."

Lawrence organizes all of this during her breaks at work and in the evenings. So there's the Power of Pink walk and quilt raffle on October 23th.  On Thursday, September 29th and Thursday, October 13th, you can shop at the Power of Pink fundraiser at Decatur Morgan Hospital's Parkway Campus from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Vendors, ranging from clothing to chocolate, will be set up near the mammography center. Proceeds from both events go to the Decatur Morgan Hospital Foundation. Their fundraising goal is $3,000. If you are interested in participating, you can call (256) 341-2187.
