Chrysanthemums are a favorite fall flower, and it's no wonder why. Chrysanthemums, commonly called mums, are perennial plants that come back each year with full, vibrant blooms in the spring and fall. Mums prefer sunny spots in your garden, but it's best to have them planted in the fall so that they're well established before the intense summer heat of the south.
Getting mums ready for fall starts in June. Cuttings are made from a plant and placed in a pot of soil. From June through mid-September, that one small cutting will grow into a full sized plant with hundreds of buds on it, which will bloom into gorgeous flowers. You can get chrysanthemums that bloom in August and early September, but they don't bloom as long because the heat is still strong during that time. Instead, buy the budding plants now, and you'll have beautiful yellow, orange, red, white, or purple blooms this fall.
