Pennsylvania mother charged in co-sleeping death of 2-month-old son

PEACH BOTTOM, Penn. - The mother of a 2-month-old little boy has been charged with criminal homicide after he died while co-sleeping in her bed. Authorities say this is the second time she has had an infant die this way.

Authorities say pediatricians warned Jessica Harper, 28, of the dangers of sleeping in the same bed as her infant multiple times. But, according to court documents, she told them she was "going to do it anyway."

Police say this is Harper's second child to die from positional asphyxia this within the last five years.

Lancaster County D.A. Craig Stedman says he can't remember another time where a situation like this has happened twice to the same mom.  "You've already lost one kid from positional asphyxia and it's absolutely outrageous conduct that you don't take extra care with another one." He goes on to say, "Your number one priority is to make sure you don't lose another one and, you know, this child relied on her as her protector."

The baby's father, William Kyle, said he knew of the first baby's death and encouraged Harper to not sleep in the bed with their baby. However, he believes his wife would never hurt their child on purpose.
