Oakwood University Church holds groundbreaking for new family life center

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.-- A new family life center is coming to Huntsville. Oakwood University Church held a groundbreaking ceremony Sunday to celebrate their new endeavor.

Next September, it will be 40 years since Oakwood University Church held a ribbon cutting for their current sanctuary facility. In commemoration of that, they are hoping to open their new family life center on the 40th anniversary.

A gymnasium, health clinic, barber shop, and educational classrooms are just a few amenities you will be able to enjoy in the new 22,00 square foot family life center, Senior Pastor Carlton Byrd tells us.

"We believe it will be more than just a facility where we just come and worship among ourselves, but we want to open it up to the community," said Pastor Byrd.

Huntsville City Council President Will Culver said the center will give the community a safe place to come learn, worship, and enjoy.

"In District 5 ,we are really working on trying to get more of these kinds of partnerships," he said.

Pastor Byrd said they wanted to create a place that could serve many different needs.

"We have a food ministry, we call it Heaven's Store House, we also have a clothing ministry, and we call it Tabitha's Corner. It's out of this facility that these ministries will operate," he said.

And the new facility fits in perfectly with Huntsville's efforts to get healthy.

"We will also have a walking track inside the gymnasium, so our seniors and community residents can come during the day and walk around the track in a very, very safe environment," Pastor Byrd adds.

Pastor Byrd said the family life center will be open to the public, and they look forward to this new connection with the community.

The family life center will be adjacent to the main church building. They plan to start the building process on Monday September 12th. Pastor Byrd said they hope to be on track to open the center by next September.
