DEKALB COUNTY, Ala. – An Ider man was arrested and charged with possessing explosives after deputies found finished homemade explosives and the chemicals used to manufacture them in his home.
Russell Neal Godwin, 43, of Ider, was arrested and charged with three counts criminal possession of explosives. DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris said it started Wednesday when his office received a call from a man stating that his wife was treating to harm herself. When deputies arrived at the residence, located on County Road 803 in Ider, they talked with the woman and found that she was OK, Harris said.
He said that’s when she then told the deputies that her husband was manufacturing explosives inside the residence. Deputies got consent to search the residence and contacted the State Fire Marshal, ATF, Ider Police Department and EOD unit from Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
Harris said after searching the house, deputies found a large amount of chemicals, finished explosives, and found evidence that five or six devices had been set off in the yard.
All explosives and chemicals were removed from the residence and made safe. Godwin was transported to the DeKalb County Detention Center, where he remains with a $45,000 bond.
Sheriff Harris said, “We are fortunate that no one was injured during this search and seizure of this explosive material. We also want to thank Ider Police, Deputy Fire Marshal Ray Cumby, ATF and EOD for their assistance.”
