UPDATE: Child undergoes night of surgery after dog attack in Crossville
CROSSVILLE, Ala. – Police call it the worst dog mauling they’ve ever seen. Thursday morning, Crossville Police were called to a home for a report of a child bitten by a dog. When they got there, they found the child very badly injured.
Authorities say the child is 4 years old. Emergency crews transported the child to Marshall Medical South in Boaz then airlifted to Birmingham in critical condition.
Crossville Police said the incident happened at a home on Justice Street.
Investigators say the child’s mother was out of the home taking other children to school. A man, who officers identified as the mother’s boyfriend, was at home at the time. This morning, WHNT News 19 spoke with the mom who identified the man as her husband.
The boy’s mother discovered the 4-year-old when she got home. Police say there was another child in the home. She is okay.
Police are not sure of the breed of the dog. It was euthanized after the incident. Authorities say they seized a number of dogs from the property.
Investigators say all of the children in the home are now in the care of the Department of Human Resources.
WHNT News 19 spoke with a woman who identified herself as the boy’s mom this morning. She says the boy underwent eight hours of surgery in Birmingham. She says the doctors told her they don’t believe her son is considered “critical” at this time.
Authorities are investigating and say charges could be filed in the case.
