Decatur police say child left in parked car likely not injured, mother charged with child abuse

DECATUR, Ala. – A Decatur woman is behind bars after police said she left her infant inside a parked car that was not running for about 20 minutes Wednesday afternoon.

Decatur Police tell us Monica Nyree Harris is charged with child abuse. They say it started around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday when the Morgan County Central Dispatch received a call about an infant left inside a car parked in the 100 block of 1st Ave NE.

When the officer arrived, he was found that the 6-week-old child had already been removed from the car. The officer reported that the child was very hot and sweaty.

A worker at a nearby building had called for medics to check on the child.

Police said child had been left inside the car for approximately twenty minutes with the car turned off and the windows up. The outside temperature at the time was about 93 degrees.

At last report, police said the child would likely not suffer any serious injury.
