ATHENS, Ala.- It's been a tough couple of years for the Athens football team. They've tallied just four wins over the last two seasons, but with a new head coach at the helm, the Golden Eagles are on a mission to turn things around.

"It's been great. He makes us work hard and we're very physical and competitive," said senior running back Jalend Davis. "We're all coming in together. In the past years, we only cared about ourselves but it's getting a lot better."

Cody Gross is back on the sideline at Athens High School but this time, as the head coach. He served as the team's offensive coordinator from 2003 to 2006.

"I'm excited. I think the players are excited," said Gross. " We had a great summer, had a great buy-in from our players. I couldn't have asked for more out of these guys."

Gross takes over for Allen Creasy who retired after 16 years. The current coach and former coach know each other well. Gross played for Creasy in high school and coached under him during that first stint in Athens.

The Golden Eagles open up the season on August 26th against Sparkman.
