Bank Street Players perform “1776” at Princess Theatre in Decatur tonight through this weekend

DECATUR, Ala - The Tony Award-Winning Musical "1776" comes to Decatur's Princess Theatre tonight, Thursday June 30th, through the rest of the weekend.

Director Susan Thompson and actor Chuck Puckett, who plays the role of Benjamin Franklin, talked with Michelle Stark about the musical's story line and their production. Thompson and Puckett are members of the Bank Street Players whose members have been fixtures in the Decatur acting community for over 30 years.

"1776" depicts the events in the Continental Congress leading up to the writing and signing of the Declaration of Independence. The characters in the musical are American icons: John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, and the other members of the Continental Congress. The music in the production is stirring and powerful; reminding audiences of the true basis of our freedoms.

Performances start tonight at 7 p.m. and run through July 3rd; with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday. Tickets are $16, or $13 for students and those over 65. You can call the Princess Theatre box office at 256-340-1778 or go to the theatre box office to reserve your tickets.
