Veteran educator discusses changes in Huntsville City Schools, explains why she’s leaving

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – It has been pretty clear lately that there is a lot going on in the Huntsville School System.  Parents and Teachers alike have been expressing their concerns over the changes.   This week veteran school teacher Pam Hill stopped by WHNT News 19 to discuss her perspective as an educator on a few of the monumental changes that have been happening in the school system.

One of the biggest changes lately is the move from textbooks to digital media.  Many teachers and parents have expressed concerns over the multitude of problems that this move has created.  Hill says “We brought in laptops very quickly… Let’s say we had a magnificent amount of laptop problems. They wouldn’t come, or the keys would come off. The students took the sim cards out and left them at home. I completely defend Dr. Wardynski, he came to my classroom more than once to see how it was going, and he thought I was doing an excellent job.  But as they saw, we didn’t have a big enough cloud.”

Some other changes that came when Dr. Wardynski became superintendent included things in the curriculum.  Hill claims “When Dr. Wardynski came, tests became extremely important, and not just any tests. It became Pearson.  Not only did we change the laptops we changed our whole curriculum.  Pearson had misled us, they said it would meet all the standards, even common core, it did not.  So in the books, we had to supplement, and we had the laptops, and they did put the programs on the lap top and the book, but the laptop often didn’t work so we would still go back and use the book.  So there were a lot of problems with that. There continue to be computer problems.  At each school I’ve been at we’ve had one technician, and most of them do the best they can, but when you have 500 to a thousand [laptops], they can only help on one at a time, so that student is losing instruction time.”
