HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – A city-wide block party is taking place in Huntsville Saturday. It’s not focused on grilling and games, but cleaning up your community.

“If you take care of your block, then everything takes care of itself,” said Operation Green Team Director Joy McKee. “Everybody’s got to take responsibility for litter and the way their yard looks and the way even their curbs look in front of their house and mowing their yard.”

The Operation Green Team initiative is enlisting residents and volunteers to take some time to give their neighborhoods a facelift. If you can’t get outside this weekend, though, McKee said you can still be involved in┬áthe cause.

“They can do their cleanups whenever it’s convenient for them, whether it’s their whole neighborhood, or whether they do it individually,” she said.

The effort also encourages you to help others.

“You might have elderly people in your neighborhood that can’t help themselves and can’t get out and do what they need to do,” said McKee.

Last year, more than 61,000 volunteers helped in the city-wide cleanup. McKee said she wants to double that this year.

“Your property value’s going to go down, if you don’t take care of your neighborhood. And so as a city, we want to look great. We want everybody’s neighborhoods to look great.”
