7 Tennessee Valley athletes named to 2016 North-South Volleyball All-Star Teams
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WHNT) – Twenty-four outstanding junior volleyball players from across the state, including seven from the Tennessee Valley, have been named to the North-South squads for the 20th annual AHSAA Summer Conference and AHSADCA All-Star Games competition in Montgomery July 18-22, according to the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association (AHSADCA).
The two volleyball teams, selected by the AHSADCA Volleyball Coaches’ Selection Committee, will square off on Thursday, July 21, at Faulkner University’s Tine Davis Gymnasium at 4:00 p.m.
The AHSADCA All-Star Games also include in-state all-star games in boys’ and girls’ soccer, baseball, boys’ and girls’ basketball and softball. The 56th North-South All-Star football game will also be played July 22 at Cramton Bowl with at 7 p.m. kickoff.
The AHSAA Summer Conference is a week-long event that includes sports’ specific clinics and special sessions for coaches, principals, athletic directors, cheerleading coaches and officials. Also, an All-Sports Equipment Expo and other related activities are scheduled throughout the week. Among the conference’s highlights will be the Sportsmanship Luncheon honoring all schools that have not had an ejection or fine during the 2015-16 school year and the Championship Coaches Awards Banquet that includes the naming of the 2015-16 Making A Difference Award Recipients, Coaches of the Year, and the AHSADCA Athletic Director of the Year. Both banquets will be Friday, July 22. Concluding the week will be the Officials Awards Banquet set for July 23 at noon.
Coaching the North Volleyball All-Stars will be Ryan Roberson of 2015 Class 4A state champion Brooks High School (44-10) and Ginny McMillan of 2015 Class 6A state runner-up John Carroll Catholic (34-10). McMillan’s team won the 6A state crown in 2014. Administrative coach is Randolph’s Sue Marshall.
South coaches are Ann Schilling of Bayside Academy (40-7) and Nancy Shoquist of Murphy. Schilling’s Lady Admirals won the 2015 Class 3A state title – the school’s 14th straight state championship and an AHSAA state record. Shoquist is a member of the AHSAA Sports Hall of Fame – registering her 1,000th career coaching triumph in 2012. Virginia Franklin of Carver-Montgomery is the South administrative coach.
The North won last summer’s competition 27-25, 25-23, 25-21 to improve to 14-5 in the series that began in 1997.
Among the volleyball players selected on the South squad are 2015 Class 6A state tournament MVP Carley Hamric, a middle hitter for Spanish Fort, and 2015 Class 3A MVP Lauren Chastang of Bayside Academy, an outside hitter. Setter Mary Ren Stevenson and libero Sofia Bruno of McGill-Toolen Catholic helped the Dirty Dozen finish second in Class 7A last season.
Among the all-stars selected for the North are middle blocker Caroline Davies and outside hitter Mary Jordan Kilgore of Class 7A state champion Mountain Brook. Setter/outside hitter Julia Shoemake of Randolph and libero Halee Thomas of Brooks helped their teams win the 5A and 4A state titles, respectively, in 2015.
