MADISON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) - A new Walmart Supercenter is close to opening just off of Winchester Road in northeast Huntsville. The store will open before the county's plan to widen the road is complete. "Two lane Winchester Road is just too much traffic for a small road," says Roger Jones, Madison County District 1 Commissioner.

With growth, comes growing pains. "Oh I think it’ll be great. It’ll allow people to buy in the county without having to go all the way to the city," he says.

North of the Flint River, work is already underway. They hope the two new spans will be open for traffic by this time next year.  “The old bridge will be torn out then the second half will be built.,” says Jones.

South of the river, the design for the new five-lane roadway and bike lane is complete, but it won't be bided out until this fall. New concrete, already poured for the curbs of Winchester Road in front of the store will be short lived. "That’ll all be taken out, that is in the city, in front of the Walmart and they’ve done the best they could do to make it as easy as possible with the Walmart going in with an old road," says the commissioner.

But until construction work moves south, you can expect to see plenty of brake lights. “It’s inconvenient for the people that uses the road in the construction phase, but it’ll be well worth it when it’s complete," says Jones.

The entire project will make Winchester Road a major traffic artery for Madison County. Crews plan to expand the road to five lanes from north of the Flint River, all the way to Dominion Circle. That's about a four mile stretch that won't be complete for several years.
