MADISON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – When a veteran moved into the Madison County community, she sought invaluable services from the Madison County Vet Center. Free services to our veterans like counseling, medical help and much more. However, she hit roadblocks just trying to get through to the center.
WHNT News 19 looked in to the situation. We tried to get in touch with the Madison County Vet Center ourselves. On various search engines, like Google and Yahoo, the number comes up as 256-539-5775. However, when you call that number, no one ever picks up. We discovered the line has been inoperable for the last few months and the center is using a temporary Birmingham number, (205) 422-0934. If you actually go to the center in person, they give you a business card with the temporary number.
Last Friday we reached out to the Department of Veterans Affairs and alerted them to the misleading number online. The department assured us the number would be fixed that same day. But nearly a week later, the number still just rings. Our nation’s finest need the proper information to help make the adjustment to civilian life.
Center management reports they informed all current clients of the temporary number change and if you visit VA.gov, click Locations, find clinics and select Alabama and Huntsville. Then you'll find the working number, 205-422-0934, right alongside the unmanned number.
As for new clients, we visited the center to find out how they are getting the word out about the temporary number. They presented a business card with the correct temporary number and reported they hand out the cards to all new visitors.
Through our digging we have informed the center of the misleading information online and made them aware that some people are having issues contacting them. We also suggested to Google the online number be updated to the one that properly serves those who served our country.
At this time the Madison County Vet Center is not sure how long the temporary number will be needed before their Huntsville number is in service.
