FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) - A Lauderdale County Sheriff's deputy was shot in the city of Florence Wednesday evening. Randall McCrary was flown to Huntsville Hospital, where he underwent surgery and is in surgical intensive care.
The shooting happened about 6:30 p.m. in the 1800 block of Ridge Avenue, north of the campus of the University of North Alabama.
The suspect, Timothy Vincent Murphy, was also shot and taken to Huntsville Hospital. He had surgery and is recovering, and is expected to survive.
Investigators say McCrary and three other deputies were serving commitment papers for a mental evaluation at the home on Ridge Avenue. They say when they went inside to get Murphy gunshots were exchanged. Authorities said Murphy's mother was at home and let the deputies inside.
The State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to handle the shooting investigation because a law enforcement official was involved.
The three other deputies involved have been placed on leave with pay, and are expected to be back on the job next week.
A spokesman for the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department says once Murphy is released from the hospital, he will be served the commitment papers and transported to Riverbend Mental Health Facility in Florence for evaluation.
