Investigators say McCrary and three other deputies were serving commitment papers for a mental evaluation at the home on Ridge Avenue. They say when they went inside to get Murphy gunshots were exchanged. Authorities said Murphy's mother was at home and let the deputies inside.

The State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to handle the shooting investigation because a law enforcement official was involved.

The three other deputies involved have been placed on leave with pay, and are expected to be back on the job next week.

A spokesman for the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department says once Murphy is released from the hospital, he will be served the commitment papers and transported to Riverbend Mental Health Facility in Florence for evaluation.

The SBI released this statement just after 10pm on Wednesday:

Special Agents with ALEA’s State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) are investigating an officer-involved shooting at the request of the Lauderdale County District Attorney. The shooting occurred today, Feb. 3 at a residence on Ridge Avenue in Florence. It resulted in both a Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Deputy and a male subject being shot.  Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be turned over to the Lauderdale County District Attorney.

Other agencies in the Shoals area are already posting messages of support for the deputy.
