ST. CLOUD, Fla. — A mother shot and killed her daughter late Tuesday night after she mistook her for an intruder, St. Cloud police said.

Police were called at about 11:51 p.m. to the area of 10th Street on the east side of St. Cloud in reference to an accidental shooting.

During the investigation, police learned the homeowner was sleeping in her bed when she thought an intruder entered the house and was quickly approaching her.

The woman then fired one round at the subject, who was later identified as the homeowner’s 27-year-old daughter.

The daughter was transported to Osceola Regional Medical Center, where she died.

The homeowner also was taken to Osceola Regional.

St. Cloud police said the homeowner’s story is consistent with physical evidence.

Sgt. Denise Roberts, public information officer with the St. Cloud Police Department, said the agency won’t be releasing names or the address of the home because a St. Cloud police officer lived in the home.

Police said the shooting appears to be accidental, but the investigation is ongoing.
