FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) – With all the Christmas festivities going on, there are tons and tons of garbage and recyclable materials being tossed away.

The Florence Recycling Center is planning accordingly. This is the first year the city will be utilizing curb-side carts for collections and they expect to be overwhelmed for the next few weeks.

Recycling managers call the mounds of materials being sorted in their center a great problem to have. “The recycle carts have certainly made people think a little bit more about recycling,” Florence Recycling Director David Koonce stated. “Now that each resident has one, we do expect them to be used heavily during Christmas.”

Koonce urges residents to break down any cardboard boxes they may have and place them in the carts. If they can’t fit, he asks citizens to place them near the blue cart.

And as much as they would like to take everything residents generate, there are several items they would rather you toss in the garbage.

“A lot of Styrofoam, a lot of plastics are not recyclable and would be contamination in the carts. So we would like everybody to take a minute to pull the Styrofoam and the plastics out and throw those in the garbage,” Koonce explained.

And doing so would help these workers sift through the recycling materials much faster.

With the influx of materials expected, Florence recycling managers expect it could take up to two weeks to have everything picked up curb-side.

If there are recyclable materials you just have to get rid of, they can be dropped off anytime at the recycling center on Terrace Street.
