MADISON, Ala. (WHNT) - It's just that time of year. Unfortunately, around the holidays, crime always seems to be on the rise. Home break-ins are certainly no exception. Madison Police are taking extra steps to keep you and your home safe over the holidays.
With the holidays upon us, we already know that the thieves are out in full force. So if you're going to leave home for a few days over the holidays, you might want to go ahead and call the police now, and there's a good reason for that. Madison Police are encouraging residents to let them know if you'll be away from home over the holidays, so they can help keep an eye on your home.
“During the times they're gone, whenever our officers are available, we'll have an officer ride by their house, take a look at the house, make sure there's no suspicious activity going on in the yard of driveway, no doors standing open, that kind of thing,” says Madison Police Captain Terrell Cook.
Cook says there's a lot of things you can do to help keep your home safe while you're gone. Start by letting your neighbors know you'll be away. “Let 'em know that you're going to be gone and to kinda keep an eye on things,” Cook says.
He also suggests you leave outside lights on and consider buying a timer that will turn one or two interior lights on and off at various times of the night. Notify the post office and newspaper to hold deliveries until you return. Leave a car in the driveway. The idea is to make it look like someone is there.
And so if you are going off for a few days over the holidays, for crying out loud don't post it on Facebook. You might as well put a sign in your front yard saying no one's home, come on in.
If you'd like for Madison Police to check your home while you're away, over the holidays or any other time of year, you can go by the police station or go to their website and fill out a vacation check request form.
