TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) – University of Alabama President Stuart Bell says a plan to add a central diversity officer is part of an effort to ensure a welcoming and inclusive campus for students of all backgrounds.

Bell said in a statement Wednesday that he’s asked the school’s Strategic Planning Council to identify a diversity officer and develop a new campus diversity plan.

Bell says the university’s provost and vice president for student affairs have also been asked to review the school’s current initiatives and ensure they’re accessible throughout campus.

The announcement comes after students demonstrated and said the racial climate on campus needed to be improved. That demonstration came after a larger protest at the University of Missouri and demonstrations at schools across the country that sparked discussions about race relations on college campuses.
