HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Madison County Sheriff Blake Dorning announced Wednesday that a former Buckhorn Middle School teacher has been arrested and charged with having sex with a student.

Duane Kentrell Erwin, 33, of Huntsville, is charged with four counts of sodomy 2nd degree and two counts of school employee engaging in a sex act or deviant sexual intercourse with a student under the age of 19. He was employed by Madison County Schools teaching at Buckhorn Middle School at the time of the alleged incident, Dorning said.

Investigators were notified of the allegation by DHR in June 2015. After an investigation, he said enough probable cause was established to charge Erwin, according to Dorning.

“Mr. Erwin is not employed with Madison County Schools and MCS was unaware of these allegations while Mr. Erwin was employed by the District. The District has been cooperating with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office since the allegations were made. The District will have no further comment while the investigation continues,” Madison County Schools director of development and communications John Southerland said.

Buckhorn Middle School’s website listed Erwin as a middle school boys basketball coach.

Erwin is in the Madison County Jail on a $180,000 bond.
