US agency probes Jeep SUV rollaway complaints
DETROIT (AP) – U.S. auto safety regulators are investigating complaints that some newer Jeep SUVs can roll away unexpectedly after drivers put them in park.
The probe covers 408,000 Grand Cherokees from the 2014 and 2015 model years. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it has received 14 complaints from drivers, including five crashes and three injuries.
The agency says the Jeeps have electronic gear selectors. Drivers pull the shift lever forward or backward to select gears and the shifter doesn’t move along a track like it does in most cars.
Investigators will determine how often the problem happens, how many vehicles it affects and whether it’s a safety problem before deciding whether to seek a recall.
