FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) – Florence city school leaders selected the location where they will temporarily place Florence Middle School while renovations are underway next school year.

Florence City Schools superintendent Janet Womack said they will place portables in the green space behind Hibbett Middle School next fall. That location was large enough for theĀ 700 middle school students.

Womack said the location was selected for numerous reasons, with safety and security as their first priority.

“That location has one main road for traffic to flow in and out, plus another entrance for busses,” Womack said. “It’s an area that isn’t surrounded by any main roads, so you don’t really drive by unless you’re going to Hibbett.”

She said they decided to keep students off of the main Florence Middle School campus while a massive, thirty-million dollar construction project is completed next year.

“If there were to be a tornado, there wouldn’t be much space to take cover at the campus,” Womack explained. “There’s plenty of space at Hibbett, and students from either school will rarely cross paths in the meantime.”

Womack added that their staggered start times between Hibbett and Florence Middle School will help make school rush hour easier. While Hibbett starts at 7:30 in the morning and releases at 2:30, Florence begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 3:05.
