NEW HOPE, Ala. – Some students at New Hope High School are flying large American flags from their vehicles, and they can continue to do so, the school says.

WHNT News 19 heard from several viewers over the weekend who said students were told they would be penalized with suspension if they flew American flags from their personal vehicles.

We contacted Madison County Schools to see if this was the case.

John Southerland, Director of Communication for the school system, said New Hope’s principal, Lavell Everett, had a concern with a potential safety issue with the big flags possibly blocking the vision of other student drivers.

Mr. Everett did request students not fly large flags off the back of vehicles, but if they do, they will not face any disciplinary action.
