Talladega Mayor hospitalized after being beaten with baseball bat

TALLADEGA, Ala. (WHNT)- According to our news partners at AL.com, 74-year-old Larry Barton, mayor of Talladega, was beaten with a baseball bat outside of a barber shop.

Police arrested a 71-year-old man after the alleged beating on Saturday morning.  Vestavia Hills Police said the assault occurred outside of Cahaba Heights Plaza Barber Shop a little before 8 a.m. Both men were transported to hospitals for treatment. As of now, Barton remains at UAB.

Vestavia Police Department’s Lt. Brian Gilham said the two knew each other, and the suspect was waiting for the victim to arrive at his part-time job Saturday morning when he attacked.

Gilham said the assault escalated over “domestic issues.”

Gilham said the suspect’s name and additional information will likely be released Monday morning when warrants are obtained.
