Power outage causes traffic lights to be out in Athens.

ATHENS, Ala. – Athens Utilities crews say a lightning arrester malfunction caused a power outage to thousands of customers this morning.

Approximately 9,600 customers lost service around 4:30 Monday morning.

Utility crews were on the scene within 15 minutes of the outage, and had power restored to everyone by 6:30 a.m.

A Lightning arrester helps to protect the equipment from surge voltages from lightning strikes or other events.
