JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - John Grass had a very successful first season as the head coach of Jacksonville State, leading the Gamecocks to a perfect 8-0 record in Ohio Valley Conference play. That success didn't carry over to the post season, the Gamecocks lost in the second round to Sam Houston State. Now in his second season Coach Grass feels like his team is in prime position to repeat their success in the OVC, and use 2014 as a learning tool to improve, and take that next step in the playoffs.
"You are always looking to get better. So you take a season to dissect it to say we could have done this better, or we need to more of this." Grass told WHNT sports reporter Chase Horn on Monday.
The rest of the league sees JSU making a run this year as well. In a poll of coaches and SID's the Gamecocks received 16 of 18 first place votes to repeat as champs. The players know that's a lot to live up to, because with all the preseason hype other teams will be aiming to take you down. "A lot of teams circle us on the schedule." Staring quarterback Eli Jenkins said. "We had a pretty good season last year, we went through the OVC undefeated, so I'm pretty sure all the teams will give us their A-game."
