JACKSON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT)- Pauline Dipierdomenico celebrated her 107th birthday Sunday afternoon, among family and friends. She lives in Scottsboro with her granddaughter Lisa Smith, who cherishes the time she has with her grandmother.
"I did not get to know her while I was growing up, and I have gotten to know her in ways that I probably never would have as a child, and it is just very very dear. I loved her before, and I love her even more now, she's a very precious precious woman," says Smith.
Dipierdomenico was born in Italy on July 8th 1908, and was the eldest of 10 children. She had dreams of becoming a nurse, but had to alter her plans to care for her family.
"She has taken care of family members who have been sick, she is a very, very remarkable woman," adds Smith.
After reaching 107 years of age, people are anxious to know, what's her secret? Smith says the answer may surprise you, "It's hot peppers. And let me tell you, she eats, the hotter the better! You don't ever touch a pepper that's been on her plate."
In the last couple years she has received a certificate of recognition from Governor Bentley, and President Obama. However, the most important gift, is the love of her family.
