MORGAN COUNTY, Ala. - The Morgan County Sheriff's Office says a 10-year-old child, identified as Mahalie Freeman, was killed in a crash on Gordon Terry Parkway late Wednesday afternoon.

State troopers say she died when a Nissan Altima hit the Chevrolet van she was in. Investigators say she was not wearing a seat belt, and the impact threw her from the van. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

The driver of the Altima was taken to an area hospital, as was the driver of the Chevy van and five other passengers from his vehicle. The driver of the van has been identified as Thomas William King from Moulton.

The wreck happened on Alabama 24 at the 64 mile marker, about a mile south of Trinity.

The crash created backups on Gordon Terry Parkway for more than an hour. Eastbound lanes were shut down until the scene cleared around 6:30.

How to help:

The girl's family started a GoFundMe account to raise money for funeral expenses.
