Athens Police investigating overnight “accidental” shooting

ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) – Athens Police are investigating a possible shooting after they received a call around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday morning from staff the Athens Limestone Hospital Emergency Room. They said a shooting victim was brought to the hospital by a private vehicle.

When officers arrived, they were told the victim, 19-year-old Austin Lopez of Athens, was shot in his side. He was flown to Huntsville Hospital by Med-Flight and is currently in surgery.

Officers and investigators spoke with Lopez’s friends that took him to the emergency room. Officers said they told them that they were all talking the WalMart parking lot, talking about guns and looking at one of their pistols. During this discussion, the pistol went off and struck Lopez.

Police said they believe this was an accidental shooting and no one has been charged at this time. They are investigating the incident.
