HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – (WHNT) – In 2013 and 2014 combined, nearly 140 people in north Alabama were diagnosed with HIV – 77 of those in Madison County alone.

But E.J. Thomas with Thrive Alabama says with the treatments now available, people are living – and even “thriving” – with the disease.

But the first step is getting tested.

“Because of the ways HIV  is transmitted, a lot of people are afraid to come in to even get tested for HIV”, explained Thomas. “It’s a preventative measure and should be treated as such. People go to the doctor once a year for a regular checkup, but most people don`t know they can ask their doctor for an HIV test.”

This Saturday, June 27, is National HIV Testing Day. Thursday through Saturday, Thrive Alabama will be set up offering free HIV tests at 3 area Walgreen’s.

The tests are free and only take 20 minutes for results.

Thrive Alabama will be set up from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the following Walgreen’s locations:

  • The corner of Mastin Lake and Pulaski Pike
  • Bob Wallace and Triana Boulevard
  • Jordan Lane and University Drive.
