MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – State Troopers confirm a Muscle Shoals High School student is dead and another person was airlifted to the hospital after a wreck on River Road and Ford Road Tuesday afternoon.

Evan Michael Isbell, 16, a Muscle Shoals High Schools student from Tuscumbia, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, according to State Troopers.

Colbert County Coroner Carlton Utley confirmed he died of head trauma.

The wreck happened around 12:45 Tuesday afternoon. The original call went out as three people were trapped in a truck when it rolled over on River Road near the Ford Road intersection. After responding, State Troopers confirmed two were involved.

River Road was shut down for over an hour while crews worked to clear the scene. One patient was airlifted to the hospital from the scene. Family friends tell us the passenger’s name is Austin Jones.

Tuesday evening, Muscle Shoals High School Principal Chad Holden released this statement:

Tonight, the Muscle Shoals family mourns the loss of junior Evan Isbell. Evan was an outstanding student in every way. As an honor roll student, he excelled in the classroom. As a football player and bass angler, he represented our school and community with class and pride. He and his dad were instrumental in organizing the Muscle Shoals Bass Anglers, a group that has grown year after year.

Administrators, coaches, counselors, and youth ministers have already offered grief counseling to a group of athletes who are hurting for their teammate tonight. My assistant principal and I visited with Evan’s family this afternoon.

Muscle Shoals High School employs a guidance counselor who works during the summer, so she will be available to speak with any student who may need grief support in the coming days.

Additionally, the Junior Class president is organizing a time of prayer for the family of their fallen classmate. The prayer service will begin at 4:00 on Wednesday, June 24 in the Muscle Shoals High School auditorium. Grief counselors and youth ministers will be on site to provide any support that is needed.
