HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Police continue to investigate an incident involving a woman who says she was raped on a walking trail off Mountain Gap Road.  However, the case has taken a turn.

Police say the woman reported Saturday, June 13 that an unknown white male approached her on  a walking trail about 11 p.m. She says the man assaulted her and left.  The woman was taken to the hospital and treated for her injuries, the initial police report said, and the police department’s Domestic Violence Unit and Crime Scene Unit responded to look into the crime further.

Monday, police released this statement:

“The Huntsville Police Department takes all reported crime seriously and investigates every case to the fullest. As the investigation developed into this incident several things were learned that has caused investigators to question the validity of the accusation. However, the investigation is continuing.  We do not believe the public at large should be alarmed or have any concerns about enjoying activities in this area. The Huntsville Police Department will continue to patrol the park and greenway areas in Huntsville as we’ve always done to ensure the public safety of park goers.”
