HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT)- June 14th is an important day in American history. The American Army celebrates its birthday, and we celebrate the adoption of the most iconic American symbol, the American Flag.

The Huntsville Elks Lodge #1648 hosted the annual Elks Flag Day Ceremony at the Huntsville Madison County Veterans Memorial Saturday afternoon.

Elks member Michael Deegan says the flag is much more than a symbol, it's our way of life, "It's really important that we show honor to the flag. Because it's living, it represents all of us, especially our soldiers who are deployed and protecting the United States and our freedoms."

The ceremony was attended by dozens, thanks to the hard work of the local Elks lodge, and various local organizations.

Elks Ehalted ruler Brenda Miller, says this is a day the patriotic organization holds dear, "We need to make sure that we keep our country at our heart, and I feel like this is something that will do that."

This is the third year the Elks collaborated with the Army and held the event at the Veterans Memorial. "It symbolizes our way of life, our freedom, and all the things we work so hard for. Our families, our churches, our community," adds Deegan.
