John Stallworth Foundation Celebrity Pairings Party slated for Thursday night, golf tournament to be held Friday
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – For more than a decade, the John Stallworth Foundation has helped fund merit-based scholarships for nearly 150 Alabama A&M students. Its biggest fundraisers take place Thursday and Friday.
“A lot of scholarship money, a lot of individuals, a lot of changed lives,” said Stallworth.
Well known athletes, like former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward and current Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver and former Madison Academy standout Jordan Matthews, serve as the draw for the events, but it’s their interaction with local students that Stallworth said he finds the most valuable.
“They’ll tell you about times when they had an opportunity to overcome and that’s what we want to show the community in Huntsville, but most importantly, show our young people,” he said.
Even with all the the star power slated to come to the Rocket City, Stallworth said the scholarship winners are the true focus.
“That’s the reason we do what we do, those young people. And they will tell their stories and that is what really excites us all,” he said.
The tournament first teed off 13 years ago, but the founder and namesake of the effort said he aims for it to grow every single year.
“I’d like for us to get to the point when we can bring on young folks and we can say, you know, this is a whole ride for you,” Stallworth said.
