LifeSource of Decatur in running for $25k grant; needs your vote on Facebook to help hundreds who need it
DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) – There’s an organization in the River City that serves hundreds of people living below poverty and trying to be successful in life. And it’s in the running for a $25,000 grant to be able to help even more people.
LifeSource is the work of Robin Ladner.
“Success here may be getting a driver’s license or obtaining a vehicle,” said Ladner.
She owns and runs the organization, teaching classes and helping her clients who range in age from 18 to 65. The clients are mostly living below poverty, have been in the criminal justice system and fight drug and/or alcohol addictions.
“We help people get jobs. We provide transportation. We have lots of different classes here,” said Ladner. “Our goal here is to try to help people get back on their feet who want to get out of the criminal justice system who want to get off drugs and alcohol, who want to better their lives.”
She started LifeSource in 2011. She has no budget, no funding and Ladner makes no money. She lives off money from a family inheritance.
She’s grateful to a church and few business that donate food to her pantry and clothes for her clients. But she wants to do more. That’s where a grant contest by State Farm comes in.
“We receive 4,000 submissions and it’s been narrowed down to 200,” said Robbie Barnes, a State Farm agent based in Decatur. The company is giving out 40 $25,000 grants to improve communities.
If she wins, Ladner wants to use the money to create a center. “To help us to do more and better at what we’re already doing,” she said.
Her clients say LifeSource is most deserving. Calvin Finney is a recovering addict who’s been clean for 7 years. “I don’t come here because I have to, I come here because it helps me,” he said. “People are changing their lives and doing well and I’m one of those people.”
Ladner knows she could help even more people if she had some help.
“There’s lots of forms of success but we see it everyday,” she said.
You can help LifeSource win by voting for them on Facebook. Voting continues through June 3rd.
